To my loyal readers, I’m sure it should come as a surprise that I am a huge fan of Taylor Swift (if you gasped at that statement, then you probably need to know me better or check out the sidebar of this blog because, isn’t it obvious?) and just like all her other loyal fans, I would totally encourage you to get a copy of her album immediately, in fact pause from reading this post and go out to your nearest record store, get a copy or two or a dozen and come home, put the record on and return to reading my post. Reason why? Because I am going to give special comments about each song and tell you a secret which is encrypted in the lyrics of the song. Something that I’ve discovered since her ‘Fearless’ album, but never wrote about it. So, hold my hands (or just stick to this page for the time) and let me take you into her new ‘Speak Now’ album!
Just like any record, this song is most probably the anthem for the entire album. And it has the right amount of country twang, joyful hopelessly in love lyrics and cheerful tone throughout the song. This is probably my most favourite song among all the songs she has in this album. This song reminds me of her like how she has always been since her ‘Fearless’ days.
Secret Code: TOBY
2. Sparks Fly
Sparks fly alright. This is another potential song for a single. Colourful lyrics decorate this song, reminiscing her usual style of storytelling romance. As my friend Chester commented and I quote, ‘was pretty okay’. Not many songs get that comment especially from such a revered critic.
Secret Code: PORTLAND OREGON
3. Back To December
This song has been rumoured to be about her break up with the Twilight kid, Taylor Lautner. Yes, she feels sad about breaking up with him although they have remain as friends up to today. Oh, Taylor…
Secret Code: TAY
4. Speak Now
Damn, another very potential ground-breaking single from this album. The lyrics from this song was inspired from an actual experience in which her friend who found out her ex was getting married soon, so Taylor asked her, “So, are you going to speak now?”, teasing her friend that she would join her to stop the wedding. Interesting?
Secret Code: YOU ALWAYS REGRET WHAT YOU DON’T SAY
5. Dear John
Another song about yet another break up. But this time, it’s not about regretting the break up instead trying to vent some anger about it. You must be thinking, this song reminds you so much of a title of a movie/book by Nicholas Sparks…It should be about a romantic relationship, but this song was about her relationship that ended fast with the infamous John Mayer.
Secret Code: LOVED YOU FROM THE VERY FIRST DAY
6. Mean
Taylor explains, “When you do what I do, which is you put yourself out there for a lot of people to say whatever they want ... there are a million different opinions…I get that, no matter what, you're going to be criticized for something. But I also get that there are different kinds of ways to criticize someone…There's constructive criticism, there's professional criticism — and then there's just being mean. And there's a line that you cross when you just start to attack everything about a person.” In short, she sings about those mean critics out there who just don’t understand her music.
Secret Code: I THOUGHT YOU GOT ME
7. The Story Of Us
This up-tempo song is rumoured to be about Taylor Lautner again. But this time, it revolves around what could have been if they were together as she bumped into him in an awards show. Isn’t Taylor L so lucky to have two songs to be written about him? By the way, this is the last song written for this record according to Taylor.
Secret Code: CMT AWARDS
8. Never Grow Up
All I can get from this song, is her hoping the one she loves would not grow up (as the title would suggest) and hope that the one she loves would remain as that person should be. Sounds like something I would tell her myself.
Secret Code: I MOVED OUT IN JULY
9. Enchanted
The beginning of this song reminded me of the intro to another song, “The Way I Loved You” in her Fearless album although slight variations has been made to ensure we don’t complain. Obviously. For this song, “All I can say is, I would be so enchanted if I could meet Taylor Swift”!
Secret Code: ADAM
10. Better Than Revenge
Taylor had never been famous for remembering the most awful break ups but this one she could not let go even for her third album. It seems this song was written to melodically jab at Camilla Belle, who was Joe Jonas’ ex that cause Joe to leave Taylor for. Rumours about Joe leaving Taylor for Belle sparked an anger that has caused this song to be created especially with the many hints found in the lyrics in this song.
Secret Code: YOU THOUGHT I WOULD FORGET
11. Innocent
Alright, who can forget the day Taylor was rudely interrupted by Kanye West during her acceptance speech in the VMAs? Well, this is her song for him. Oh gosh, I can remember that day and boy, do I have this hatred for that arse that stems so deeply I can’t forget his actions until this day. Whether or not he has apologized, his actions will never ever be forgotten as Taylor had never crossed his path before!
Secret Code: LIFE IS FULL OF LITTLE INTERRUPTIONS
12. Haunted
The title for this song might bring creeps and question marks wondering why would she give a title like this for one of her songs. Moreover, the beginning of the song might scare the goose bumps up from your skin but as you listen to the lyrics, you realize you’re listening about a girl who was forgotten and it would touch the heart in an eerie way that even I can’t describe.
Secret Code: STILL TO THIS DAY
13. Last Kiss
A heart warming song about missing someone and all you can remember about them is the last kiss both of you had before they left. The tone of this song reminds me of the songs found in Fearless, the last few songs in it and it is a good thing, mind you.
Secret Code: FOREVER AND ALWAYS
14. Long Live
In the past, they chant ‘Long Live the King’ or ‘Long Live Your Majesty’. What about this song you say? Well, Taylor Swift pictured herself with her King and she was his Queen. And together, they ruled. All the spectacular details she incorporated in the lyrics just tells me that the princess imagination within her has yet to evaporated to thin air and that is awesome. How I wish I was the guy standing beside her for this!
Secret Code: FOR YOU
Deluxe Edition
15. Ours
This song just reminds you, when you’re with the one you love, no matter what happens around you…the love you hold with the one you love is yours together and nobody can take it away. Sweet? Totally.
16. If This Was A Movie
I love this song. It makes all those movie clichés in those romantic flicks make more sense than any way possible. My only regret, no one to feel this song with. Oh well, Come back Come back Come back to me like…you would you would if this was a movie, Taylor!
17. Superman
You know those songs titled ‘Superman’? Five For Fighting…Eminem…and now Taylor Swift! She imagines herself being in love with her own Superman. The normal average guy but she knows that it is him. And she loves him forever, will always wait for him to come back and hopes he won’t save another girl. Aww…
Well, there are other songs found in the Deluxe version but nothing much difference, really. Those other covers are quite alright. But somehow, it is always the original country tone infused songs that is so Taylor Swift! Call me old-fashioned but that is the way it should be, especially for Taylor Swift!!!
Taylor Swift said in her album, “These songs are made up of words I didn’t say when the moment was right in front of me. These songs are open letters. Each is written with a specific person in mind, telling them what I meant to tell them in person.” Well, I hope those that she is addressing would take her notice.
Well, I have finished my entire walkthrough for the ‘Speak Now’ album which was my most anticipated album to come out after news about her recording a new album entered my ears. I do hope you have enjoyed this little tour even though it basically lots of reading in your part. I hope you like this post because I love it and I love Taylor Swift. Hopes of her coming to Malaysia and to see her backstage is seriously like one of my top priorities. If only, and only only that could happen.
If you wondered what those ‘Secret Codes’ are from, you might need to take sometime figuring that out yourself, just like I did. But it has to do with the lyrics to each song as well as the lyrics booklet provided with each copy of the album.
I hope you had fun just like I did. My post ends here. I do hope to get some readings and comments from my readers. Please and thank you.
